The 2016-17 athletic season recently came to a close for the Porterville College Pirates and last week, the Athletic Department honored 18 student-athletes as well as a pair of special Pirate supporters at the annual Academic and Athletic Achievement Awards ceremony.
This season's award recipients were:
Freshmen of the Year: Brooke Reilly (Women's Volleyball), Malik McCowan (Men's Basketball)
(First year student athlete, demonstrated excellence in his or her sport)
Sophomores of the Year: Dee Jackson (Women's Basketball), Jordon Grader (Baseball)
(Second year student-athlete, must have competed two years at PC, demonstrated excellence in his or her sport)
Pirates of the Year: Lauren Beath (Women's Basketball), Jackson Cascio (Men's Basketball)
(Student-Athlete that demonstrates a "team-first" attitude, shows heart, spirit and dedication to his or her teammates and coaches)
Tyler Curry Sportsmanship Award: Mckenzie Hendricks (Softball), Carlos Angel (Men's Basketball)
(Student-Athlete who consistently displays outstanding behavior and conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship)
Tiffanee Anderson Most Inspirational Award: Callie Albison (Women's Volleyball), Miguel Mejia (Men's Basketball)
(Eligible Student-Athlete (1st or 2nd year) who has overcome personal odds/adversity and is an inspirational and valuable member of his or her team)
Kathie Gifford Special Recognition Award: Lorie Baker
(Individual from campus who demonstrates interest, support and/significant contribution to PC Athletics)
Above and Beyond Award: Joe Tanguma
(Individual from campus who demonstrates interest, support and/significant contribution to PC Athletics)
Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Jayme Knauer (Softball)
(Second-year Student-Athlete with the top overall Grade Point Average, also must have competed two years at PC)
