Nightmare ninth inning ends in loss to Cerro Coso

Cerro Coso College sent 19 batters to the plate in the top of the ninth inning and scored 13 runs on its way to handing Porterville College a miserable 22-1 loss to open a three-game Central Valley Conference series on Tuesday.

Shaky defense also cost the Pirates dearly as seven errors resulted in eight unearned runs.

Cerro Coso was up 9-0 heading into the final frame before four hit batters and a pair of walks opened the horrendous ninth.

Porterville scored its lone run in the seventh thanks to a RBI single by Jason Romero that scored Lane Page. PC had the bases loaded with no outs but could only manage the one run.

The Pirates totaled 6 hits in the contest, getting a pair from Moses Garza (2-for-4) to lead PC at the plate.

Nico Portillo was credited with the loss. He allowed 5 earned runs and 9 hits over 5 innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Porterville lost its 10th straight game to fall to 1-26 overall and 0-10 in the CVC. The series with Cerro Coso continues on Friday (Mar. 29) in Ridgecrest at 6 p.m. with the finale back in Porterville on Saturday (Mar. 30) starting at 1 p.m.
