Pirates stifled by No. 2 Merced defense in home loss

Sophomore Sierra Perez scored a team-high 13 points in an otherwise frustrating night for Porterville College. The Pirates committed 40 turnovers against a relentless Merced College defense and loss to the No. 2 Northern California-ranked Blue Devils by a final score of 104-40 on Saturday.

Porterville trailed Merced (22-2, 7-0 CVC) 27-9 after the first quarter and faced an insurmountable 57-17 halftime deficit.

Perez nailed 4 three-pointers, part of seven made by the Pirates on the night. She also grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.

Raquel Gonzalez had a good game off the bench, contributing 8 points and 7 rebounds. Kathy Rodriguez totaled 5 points and 5 rebounds while Kassy Cervantes also scored 5.

The loss dropped Porterville to 3-18 overall and 0-7 in the Central Valley Conference. The Pirates will look to snap an eight-game losing streak next Saturday (Feb. 9) at 6 p.m. when they travel to West Hills College Lemoore for a CVC contest.
