Porterville Women's Volleyball drops CVC opener 3-1 at Sequoias

Coming off a pair of wins at the Cerritos College tournament, the Porterville College women's volleyball team couldn't keep the momentum going and suffered a 3-1 loss at College of the Sequoias in both teams' Central Valley Conference opener on Wednesday night.

COS took the opening set 25-14 before Porterville came back to win an extended second set 27-25. But the Giants secured the match victory with 25-16 and 25-9 wins in the third and fourth sets.

Sophomore Kendyl Estes had a match-high 50 attempts and slammed home 10 for kills to lead the Pirates' offense. She also added 11 digs and a solo block.

Sophomore Shelby Vanasen also had a good all-around match as she totaled 8 kills, 4 blocks (3 solo), 2 aces, and 2 digs. Freshman Heidy Benitez led PC with 12 digs and sophomore Brandy Rico had a team-high 25 assists. Sophomore Josie Lopez also chipped in with 7 kills, 4 digs, and an ace. Freshman Brooke Reilly also had a big game at the net with 6 blocks.

Sequoias (4-2, 1-0 CVC) was led by Idalis Rubalcava's 12 kills.

Porterville, now 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the CVC, returns to action on Friday (Sep. 16) when the Pirates travel to West Hills Coalinga for a 6 p.m. conference match.
