Porterville College Volleyball home opener spoiled by Sequoias

Sophomores Shelby Vanasen and Kendyl Estes both slammed down nine kills each but Porterville College couldn't get much else going offensively as rival College of the Sequoias ruined the Pirates' home opener with a sweep on Friday at Porterville High School.

COS downed the Pirates in the Central Valley Conference match by scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-18 as Porterville fell to 7-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

Vanasen and Estes combined for 18 of Porterville's 20 kills on the night. Gretchen Doyel and Brooke Reilly came up with the other PC kills.

From the back line, sophomore Callie Albison led Porterville with 18 digs while sophomore Heidy Benitez added 11 digs. Sophomore setter Brandy Rico directed the Pirates' offense and totaled 15 assists to go along with 14 digs.

For Sequoias (11-4, 8-1 CVC), Idalis Rubalcava led all with 13 kills and Brittney Roush totaled 31 digs.

The Pirates return to the court on Wednesday (Oct. 19) for the second of eight straight home matches to close out the regular season. PC hosts West Hill College Coalinga at 6 p.m. with the contest played at Porterville High School.
