Pirates complete pair of weekend events with three wins

It was a successful two-day stretch for the Porterville College women's volleyball team. The Pirates hit the road on Friday to win two out of three matches at the Skyline College 4-way Classic and then headed south on Saturday for a split of two contests at the Los Angeles Mission Quad.

Porterville started with a four-hour drive to San Bruno in the Bay Area. The Pirates opened with a 25-17, 25-10, 25-15 sweep of host Skyline. That was followed by a narrow five-set (25-10, 25-22, 15-25, 16-25, 15-9) loss to City College of San Francisco. But PC bounced back to close the night with a 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20) win over College of the Redwoods.

Sophomore Davina Lopez totaled 21 kills and had 11 total blocks over the three matches. Freshman Aliza Bun led PC with 23 kills while freshman Abigail Hines posted 18 kills and 6 blocks. From the back line, freshman Amber Joy Dela Cruz had a team-best 28 digs.

The Pirates returned to the vans and the road for a two-hour trek to Sylmar on Saturday.

Porterville faced a tough Mt. San Jacinto College squad and suffered a 25-16, 26-24, 25-20 loss but was able to turn things around with a 3-1 (15-25, 12-25, 25-23, 12-25) victory over Fullerton College to make it a happy trip home.

Hines put together another solid day, posting 8 kills against Mt. San Jacinto and 10 more in the Fullerton win.

Porterville moved to 5-6 overall after the weekend's action. The Pirates return to the court on Wednesday (Sep. 13) at 6 p.m. when they open Central Valley Conference play at College of the Sequoias.
