Baseball: Pirates' offense silenced by Reedley in three-game CVC sweep

The Porterville College bats couldn't get much going over a three-game Central Valley Conference series and were swept by the Reedley College Tigers. The set wrapped up on Saturday with a 9-0 loss at Reedley as the Pirates were held hitless. Porterville was also shut out in Thursday's 12-0 defeat following a 10-2 loss in the opener on Tuesday. Over the three games, the Pirates totaled five hits.

Game 1: Reedley 10, Porterville 2
Porterville had four hits in the opening-game loss and managed to score its lone runs of the series in the seventh inning. Dane Wasden and Jordan Szolek had a hit and scored a run for the Pirates while Jordan Grader took the loss. He allowed 13 hits and six runs over 5 1/3 innings. Andrew Vivanco pitched well with a scoreless inning of relief.

Game 2: Reedley 12, Porterville 0
Moses Garza's lead-off single in the bottom of the third inning was the Pirates lone hit in the 12-0 home defeat. Porterville also drew five walks but left eight runners on base. Matt Weis earned the loss for the Pirates after allowing nine runs (seven earned) and 12 hits over 6 2/3 innings. Eric Coronado was a bright spot out of the bullpen as he scattered four hits over a final scoreless 2 1/3 innings.

Game 3: Reedley 9, Porterville 0
Reedley completed the sweep at home as six pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter over the Pirates. Nick Haskins drew a walk off Reedley starter Alec Akins to break up the perfect game while a Reedley error allowed a second PC base runner to reach. Jhared Gonzalez allowed six runs (four earned) and seven hits over six innings to take the loss. He struck out six and walked three.

Porterville has lost 12 straight games and has fallen to 3-23 overall and 0-9 in conference play. The Pirates will look to snap out of the funk on Tuesday (Mar. 28) at 2 p.m. when they begin a three-game CVC series at home vs. West Hills College-Coalinga.
