Baseball: Pirates edged 3-2 at Sequoias

Porterville College sophomore pitcher Matt Weis turned in a quality start, allowing three runs and four hits in a complete-game effort, but the Pirates' offense left 14 runners on base in a narrow 3-2 loss at College of the Sequoias on Thursday.

A three-run, third-inning by the Giants proved to be the lone blemish on Weis' day. COS had three of their four hits in the frame and also drew two walks. A two-out, two-run double by Isaiah Esinoza proved to be the game-winner for Sequoias.

Despite totaling a season-high 13 hits, the Pirates' offense couldn't come through when needed most. PC left the bases loaded in the sixth and stranded two runners on base in the second, fifth, seventh, and eighth innings.

Eric Loredo smacked a RBI single that scored Fritz Bowers in the top of the second and Moses Garza came through with a two-out single to drive in Christian Sanchez in the eighth for PC's final run.

Garza, Jordan Szolek, Dane Wasden, and Loredo all had two hits each for Porterville.

The Central Valley Conference defeat dropped PC to 3-28 overall and 0-14 in conference play. The Pirates will look to snap their 17-game losing streak on Saturday when they conclude the three-game conference series vs. the Giants at home.
