Big inning dooms Pirates in loss at Barstow

Nicolas Portillo and Jose Narvaiz combined for six of Porterville College's nine hits in the Pirates' 12-4 non-conference loss at Barstow Community College on Thursday.

Barstow turned a narrow 5-4 lead into a blowout thanks to a seven-run, seventh-inning rally. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first off PC starter Jhared Gonzalez.

But Porterville responded with a three-run, second inning. Portillo's two-run single was the big blow of the frame as he drove in Ryan Pearce and Isaiah Gomez.

Barstow added another run in the second before the Pirates scored their final run in the sixth. Alex Sarmienta stole third base and came in to score on an errant throw to get Porterville within one.

In the seventh, Barstow sent 11 batters to the plate and totaled five hits on its way to the big inning.

Porterville, now 0-14 overall, returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 24) when the Pirates travel to Modesto Junior College for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
