Pirates rally late for opening-day win at Hartnell
SALINAS – Xavier Trolio homered and Tyler Stansberry smacked an RBI single for the game-winning run in the top of the eighth to help lead Porterville College to a 3-2 come-from-behind win at Hartnell College on Saturday in the 2025 season opener.
The Pirates trailed 2-0 after six innings despite a strong opening-day start from Louie Torres on the mound. He went six innings, allowing just one earned run and five hits while striking out eight.
The PC offense finally came alive in the top of the seventh. Stansberry led off the frame with a single and promptly stole second base to get in scoring position. Jayson Castillo followed with an RBI-single to get the Pirates on the board.
In the eighth, Trolio smashed a lead-off, solo homerun to tie up the game. Later in the inning, Gio Chavez hit a one-out single and moved to second on a ground out. And with two outs, Stansberry came through with the clutch base hit to give Porterville its first lead.
The Pirates' bullpen came through to shut the door for the win. Braden Parmley (7th), Nicholas Torres (8th), and Jonah Ward (9th) tossed scoreless innings to turn away the host Panthers. Torres earned the win while striking out a pair with Ward picking up the save.
Porterville (1-0) will look to keep the momentum going on Tuesday (Jan. 28) when the Pirates host Folsom Lake College in its home opener.
