MOORPARK – New Porterville College men's basketball head coach Kyle Wallace and his 2023-24 Pirates picked up their first win, a 55-42 victory over Los Angeles Pierce College on Thursday at the Moorpark College Tournament.
PC was able to bounce back after dropping its season-opener the night before, a 98-62 setback to host Moorpark on Wednesday.
Freshman forward DeMarcus Allen was solid in his opening games. He averaged 15.5 points and 7 rebounds over the two contests to lead the Pirates. He scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 8 boards in the win over Pierce and had 14 points and 6 boards vs. Moorpark.
Sophomore guard Akeives Shorts led the PC backcourt. He averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists over the tournament. He went for 11 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists against Pierce and totaled 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in the Moorpark loss.
Raven Ortiz poured in 12 points in the Pierce win while Justin Sabater scored 11 points against Moorpark.
Porterville, now 1-1 overall, returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 7) when the Pirates travel to No. 1 state-ranked Fullerton College for a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
