Softball: PC swept in doubleheaders at Gavilan, Cabrillo

The Porterville College Pirates are still in search of their first win of the season after dropping a pair of doubleheaders in the bay area. On Friday, the Pirates suffered losses at Gavilan College in Gilroy and suffered the same outcome in a Saturday doubleheader at Cabrillo College in Aptos.

Sophomore Britnei Murray led the Pirates offense over the weekend, batting .500 over four games by going 5 for 10. Porterville, now 0-8 overall, will look to snap its losing streak on Tuesday (Feb. 28) 2 p.m. when the Pirates open Central Valley Conference play at Cerro Coso College.

Game 1: Gavilan 3, Porterville 1
The Gavilan Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone early. Porterville was held scoreless all the way until the sixth inning. Porterville had the bases loaded with two outs but managed just a run by Raeleen Torres. Danay Lee went 2 for 3 to lead PC at the plate while Hannah Grimes took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) and six hits in the complete-game effort.

Game 2: Gavilan 11, Porterville 3
Porterville jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of quick runs in the top of the first inning, but that was promptly erased by seven runs in the bottom of the frame by Gavilan. Taylor Maddox drove in a pair of runs as she was one of three Pirates to go 2 for 3 in the game. Her RBI double in the first scored Torres while her single in the third drove in Jayme Knauer. Murray (RBI) and Knauer (triple) also had two hits each. Sophia Chamberlain picked up the loss for PC as she allowed 10 runs (eight earned) and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Game 1: Cabrillo 9, Porterville 1
The Pirates totaled eight hits in the contest but also committed three errors that led to a pair of unearned runs. Porterville trailed 3-1 before Cabrillo blew the game open with four runs in the fourth inning. Murray led PC at the plate going 2 for 3. Lee drove in Knauer for the Pirates' lone run with a RBI double in the third. Grimes took the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) and 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Game 2: Cabrillo 7, Porterville 3
PC managed just four hits in their final game of the weekend on the way to the tough loss. Samantha Dale had two of those hits and drove in a run. Lee added a RBI double and Murray went 1 for 2 with a run scored. Chamberlain was hit hard in the loss as she allowed seven runs and 14 hits in the complete-game effort.
