Softball: Pirates rout Cerro Coso 14-0 in five innings for first win

The Porterville College offense finally exploded in a big way as the Pirates totaled season-highs with 16 hits and 14 runs to roll to a huge 14-0 mercy-rule victory at Cerro Coso College in their Central Valley Conference opener on Tuesday.

PC, now 1-8 overall, snapped an eight-game losing streak to open the season and moved to 1-0 in conference play.

Freshman first baseman Mckenzie Hendricks paced the Pirates as she went a perfect 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI. Britnei Murray also drove in three runs, thanks to her three-run home run in the top of the third inning.

Jayme Knauer (2 for 3, 2 runs), Taylor Maddox (2 for 4, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Danay Lee (2 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBI), and Julianne Huerta (2 for 3, 2 runs , 2 RBI) all hit multi-hit games for Porterville.

Taylor Brennan also picked up 2 RBI. Her two-out, two-run double in the top of the first capped a five-run inning that set the tone early for the Pirates.

Porterville's pitchers also came up big. Sophia Chamberlain allowed just one hit over four innings while Hannah Grimes completed the shutout with a perfect fifth.

The Pirates will look to build on the big win when they return to action on Thursday (Mar. 2) to host Taft College in a CVC doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
