Pirates hammer Cuesta in doubleheader sweep

Porterville College freshman Anissa Gomez went 6-for-7 with 6 RBI while Kuea Angilau also went 6-for-7 with a pair of home runs and 4 RBI, and Ashley Rojo drove in 8 runs over a two-game sweep of visiting Cuesta College on Friday. The Pirates won the opener 9-0 in six innings and closed out the day with a 17-1 rout in five innings.

The non-conference victories improved PC to 13-8 overall.

Angilau began her impressive day at the plate with a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the batter's box. She smashed the first of two home runs, added a double, scored 3 runs, and drove in a pair in the opening-game win.

Gomez went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI while Raquel Gonzalez also collected two hits (2-for-3), scored 3 runs and had a RBI. Rojo chipped in with 2 RBI and scored a run.

Alexis Rodriguez got the Game 1 shutout win, going the distance while allowing just three hits.

The Pirates continued their offensive show into the second game. They greeted Cuesta starting pitcher Emmilee Boles by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. A nine-run, fourth-inning turned an 8-0 rout into a blowout.

It was Gomez with the big game in the second contest, matching Angilau with a 4-for-4 game at the plate. She drove in four runs and scored twice.

Angilau (2-for-3) capped her day with a home run, 2 more RBI, and scored 3 runs. And Ashley Rojo had a career-high 6 RBI, including a home run and double.

Gonzalez drove in 3 runs and Nicole Nakanishi went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and a RBI.

Ashley Eyraud got the win. She tossed a complete game, allowing one run and three hits.

Porterville will look to get the momentum going when the Pirates return to action on Saturday (Mar. 23) to host Sierra College in a non-conference doubleheader.
