Pirates edged 59-58 by Lassen at Shasta Tournament

A late-game rally came up short for the Porterville College women's basketball team. Facing Lassen Community College in their opening game of the Shasta College Invitational, the Pirates suffered a narrow 59-58 loss on Thursday.

That game was followed by a 61-37 defeat by host Shasta and an 80-61 loss to College of the Redwoods.

A slow start against Lassen cost Porterville as the Pirates were outscored 10-3 in the opening quarter. They bounced back in the second and went into halftime trailing 26-22. Lassen extended its lead to 47-40 entering the final period but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Cienna Enriquez led PC with 16 points and added 8 rebounds. Mia Pengilly totaled a double-double off the bench with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds while Jazlynne Medrano scored 14 points.

PC fell behind early again vs. Shasta, trailing 23-10 after one quarter and couldn't dig itself out of the hole.

Kaija Ambriz had 9 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pirates. Enriquez put in 9 points as well and Pengilly totaled 11 rebounds to go with 4 points.

A 38-point third-quarter by Redwoods hurt Porterville in the final loss of the weekend. The Pirates outscored Redwoods in the second and fourth quarters but it wasn't enough.

Pengilly had a huge game with her second double-double of the tourney with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Indianna Tobias and Medrano both scored 12 points each and Enriquez added 9 points and 8 rebounds.

Porterville, now 0-9, will look to pick up its first win when it hosts Hartnell College on Friday (Dec. 10) at 5 p.m.
