MODESTO – The 2023 Porterville College women's volleyball season got off to a rough but promising start. On Friday, the Pirates suffered consecutive losses to Cosumnes River College and host Modesto Junior College.
Porterville totaled 16 kills and 27 digs in a 25-11, 25-17, 25-14 loss to Cosumnes River to open the day. Returning sophomore Davina Lopez led PC with 4 kills while fellow sophomore Kailey Cha had a team-high 8 digs. Rubi Guzman served up 3 aces and added 3 digs.
The Pirates avoided a sweep in their second match, but ultimately fell to Modesto 3-1 by scores of 25-10, 25-22, 17-25, 25-18.
PC came up with 40 digs in the contest, led by 9 from Noelani Espiritu, 8 from Brandi Flores, and 7 digs by Amber Joy Dela Cruz. Morgan Mattos had a team-high 5 kills while Lopez and Aaliyah Ayon added 4.
Porterville is back in action next Friday (Sep. 1) when the Pirates return to Modesto Junior College for another pair of non-conference matches. PC faces College of Marin at 3 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. contest against Solano College.
